Posted October 12th, 2010 by Ananda Perwira No Comments »

Backup and recovery are important activities for your computer data protection. Without data backup and data recovery, we will lose our valuable data, productivity and revenue as well. Of course to prevent loss of data, we will treat our computer and the data stored in its hard drive with extreme care. But we must also be ready if the unexpected comes especially for our business data protection. It will be a disaster and even the end of our company if we lose all valuable data of our clients.

User errors, system crash, software errors, virus attacks, hacking, hardware failure, and natural disasters are the common cases, the cause of data loss. As a good computer user we can do some simple actions to help us avoid loss of data. For instance, if we have hard drive in large capacity, we can make 3 or 4 partitions, including system only partition, software / program files partition, data partition, and data backup partition. In this way, your data, program files and settings will be save if a system crash or virus infection occurs. And for data backup, you can save your data or documents double in different partitions (the original in data partition and the copy in data backup partition). In this way, you do not need to worry when your file is corrupt by unsuccessful saving process or if you or someone accidentally deletes your files. And if there is partition corrupt, file system or logical data loss and error, you can perform a recovery by yourself using data recovery software.

But what if something worse happens to you?

DVD Optical Drive, as the price becomes more affordable now, this makes us more confused in choosing the type of drive and media (Blank DVD). For instance, there are several types of DVD media available, such as DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM. With these DVD media, we cannot only write/record large files like videos, but also back-up our hard drive efficiently. However before we decide to buy, there are the differences among these standard DVD media that we need to know.

DVD-R
The same as CD-R, this disk can be written once (with a 4.7 GB capacity). There are two types of DVD-R media: DVD-RA (for Authoring) and DVD-RG (for General). DVD-RA is intended for commercial and professional development (such as movies or songs recording) and uses a DVD-RA Drive with 635-nm laser to record. Meanwhile, DVD-RG is the option for home use. It is more affordable than the DVD-RA and available in many stationary stores. This media can also be run on the DVD-RAM and DVD+R unit.

DVD-RW
This is the erasable version of the DVD-R. To use this media, you need to buy DVD-RW Drive. DVD-RW drives can write DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. The same as DVD-R, DVD-RW disks are playable in many DVD drives and players. We can write a large number of data at once. And if we want to write new data on the same disk, we can erase the existing data by formatting the disk. DVD-RW discs can be rewritten about 1,000 times. Read the rest of this entry »

In Microsoft Windows such as Win XP, when you right-click on a file and select the Properties, you will find information on the appeared properties box about the type of file or the name of the program it works with. Windows can recognize it based on its file extension that is registered in the registry. File extension is the three last characters (unique suffix) after the period in the name of a file that is automatically added according to application you use when saving a document.

If you cannot see this file extension, you can open Windows Explorer, select the Tools menu – Folder Options, move to the View tab, and uncheck Hide extensions for known files types in the Advanced Settings. You can also move to the Files Types tab if you want to see all registered file extensions in your windows. There are tens or maybe hundreds of registered file extensions.
