In Microsoft Windows such as Win XP, when you right-click on a file and select the Properties, you will find information on the appeared properties box about the type of file or the name of the program it works with. Windows can recognize it based on its file extension that is registered in the registry. File extension is the three last characters (unique suffix) after the period in the name of a file that is automatically added according to application you use when saving a document.

If you cannot see this file extension, you can open Windows Explorer, select the Tools menu – Folder Options, move to the View tab, and uncheck Hide extensions for known files types in the Advanced Settings. You can also move to the Files Types tab if you want to see all registered file extensions in your windows. There are tens or maybe hundreds of registered file extensions. The more applications you install the more file extensions will be registered in your windows.
